Alumni Spotlight: Stephanie Andujar '09

There are a variety of words to describe actress
Stephanie Andujar '09
. Talented, brave, resilient. None of them perfectly encapsulates the entirety of her character. This Pace alumna has acted in Academy Award winning films, graced stages, and created her own production company. All these accomplishments are made possible through a mix of perseverance, a quality education, and an upbringing that is only possible in New York.
Born in Harlem, she spent most of her youth in Chelsea public housing. The daughter of to two Puerto Rican parents, Stephanie’s love of performance began at a young age. Her earliest memories are being nudged to sing in front of family and friends by her mother. Her father introduced her to the art of film. Stephanie’s dad would take her and her siblings to see classics like Midnight Express, Donnie Brasko, and Scream. These movies probably weren’t appropriate for kids, but Stephanie loved them.
Chelsea was a rough neighborhood. Stephanie’s father even spent some time incarcerated. Not wanting the same fate for their children, Stephanie’s parents enrolled her in an afterschool program centered around acting, and then a performing arts high school on the Upper West Side. While there Stephanie got a formal education in performance, starring in productions of
The Wiz
and
The Crucible
, and going on to get a part on an episode of Law and Order: SVU.
After high school, she was the first to in her family to earn a degree and had a lot of pressure to succeed. Stephanie chose to major in Hotel, Hospitality, and Tourism Management, a program she found challenging. She attended classes, worked a job at the Department of Buildings, and held an internship at a Marriott. Some nights she would only be able to get a few hours of sleep between her various responsibilities. Pace was a bit of a culture shock. Students and faculty were more conservative than the boisterous Puerto Rican community from which she had come. Despite the challenges, and the difficult economics, accounting and hotel classes, Stephanie is proud to say she was able to graduate in 2009 with the help of the great friendships and colleagues she met at Pace.
While in college, Stephanie secured a part in the film Precious. It was her first exposure to the slow, methodical experience of making a film. It was in sharp contrast to the quick turnaround of theater and television. She had the unforgettable experience of going to the Sundance Film Festival. She has performed in the film Majorie Prime, acting beside Jon Hamm, and gained critical acclaim for her guest appearance on Orange is the New Black. She has also combined her love of art with the business education she gained at Pace. In 2016, Stephanie and her family founded Andujar Productions and she hopes to harness her knowledge to create projects that speak to her and her talents. As of today, Andujar Productions has produced five seasons of Stephanie’s one-woman comedy show “StephA: One Woman Show,” and found a niche in through the production of music videos. Stephanie plans to use her company to one day create a feature film and to uplift other people of color in the film industry.
